The Maldives is set to strengthen international air connectivity and expand its tourism footprint as Visit Maldives Corporation prepares to participate in Routes Asia 2026, scheduled to take place from 14 to 16 April in Xi’an, China.
The participation, undertaken in collaboration with the International Halal Tourism Organization, comes as the country seeks to engage directly with global aviation stakeholders and position itself within evolving regional and international travel networks.
Routes Asia is the Asia-Pacific region’s leading aviation route development forum, bringing together airlines, airports, tourism authorities and industry leaders to shape future air connectivity. More than 900 aviation decision-makers are expected to attend this year’s event.
Visit Maldives Corporation said the platform will be used to strengthen international air links, explore emerging and high-potential markets, and build strategic partnerships with airlines and industry players. The engagement is also expected to enhance the global visibility of the Maldives tourism brand at a time when competition among destinations is intensifying.
The initiative is led by the International Halal Tourism Organization, with support from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Maldives and the Maldives Embassy in Beijing, reflecting ongoing cooperation between the two countries in tourism and aviation development.
National participation is further supported by Maldivian Airports, operated by Island Aviation Services Limited, as the official airport partner, and Manhattan Grand Hotel as the official accommodation partner.
Maldivian Airports plays a central role in the country’s aviation ecosystem, supporting domestic connectivity, airport operations, ground handling services and the national airline Maldivian. Its involvement highlights broader efforts to strengthen aviation infrastructure and improve connectivity across the island nation.
The Manhattan Grand Hotel, which is set to become one of the largest hotels in Hulhumalé, represents continued investment in expanding accommodation capacity to support future tourism growth.
Through its presence at Routes Asia 2026, the Maldives aims to reinforce its position as a leading luxury and leisure destination, while also promoting its appeal as a safe and premium travel experience. The country is also expected to highlight its focus on sustainable tourism and the blue economy in engagements with global partners.
As travel patterns continue to shift across the Asia-Pacific region, participation in route development forums has become increasingly important for destinations seeking to secure airline partnerships and diversify source markets.
The Maldives’ engagement at Routes Asia 2026 signals a forward-looking strategy focused on strengthening connectivity, enhancing resilience in the aviation sector, and supporting long-term growth in tourism, which remains a key pillar of the national economy.
